Guidelines for Taft Center Graduate Assistantship

This assistantship provides Taft Graduate Students with the opportunity to work in support of the activities of the Taft Research Center. It is an opportunity to interact regularly with a broad spectrum of academics across the humanities and related social sciences. The assistantship carries a full University Graduate Scholarship and $11,000 stipend

Eligibility

Any graduate student in a Taft department, who has completed formal coursework in their program and is entering a thesis or dissertation-writing year.

The assistantship’s role is to serve as staff support for the Taft Research Center office. Responsibilities include: scheduling of and preparation for Center activities (meetings/lectures), proposal distribution to committees, support of public relation efforts, and direct assistance to the Taft Secretary and Faculty Chair. The assistantship assumes an average of no more than twenty hours per week in support of Center activities and a flexible schedule.

Application

ONE COPY MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE DEPARTMENT GRADUATE DIRECTOR, WHO WILL FORWARD ENTIRE PACKET TO THE TAFT OFFICE.

  1. Cover Sheet;
  2. 500 word cover letter describing research focus, stage of graduate work, and interpersonal and organizational skills. The letter should indicate why pursuing graduate work as a Taft Center graduate assistant would enhance one’s graduate education and career goals;
  3. Current curriculum vitae (2 page version);
  4. 1 letter of recommendation from Graduate Director;

* Note: A short list of candidates will be invited to interview for the award.

Terms of Grant

  1. Sept 1st to end of Spring quarter appointment;
  2. The Taft Center Graduate Assistant must coordinate his or her schedule with the Taft Secretary on a weekly basis.
  3. This award may be renewed for one additional year based on performance.
