Requirements

Most of one's first and second years are spent fulfilling the curriculum requirements of the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences, as well as general education. Students are strongly encouraged to complete departmental requirements, especially quantitative analysis (318 and 319), research methods (321 and 322), and sociological theory (304 and 305) prior to the end of their junior year. Other requirements and electives can be completed with a firm grounding during one's junior and senior years.

Students majoring in sociology must completed a minimum of 54 hours in sociology at the 200-level and above, including 27 hours of required core courses and 6 hours of advanced electives for which quantitative analysis, research methods, and/or theory are pre-requisites. The latter 6 hours constitute one's capstone experience in the major.

Introduction to Sociology (Sociology 141) is a prerequisite for all other courses in the department, counts toward A&S distribution requirements in the Behavioral and Social Sciences, and may not be counted toward the 54-hour requirement in the major.
