News and Events

1. The Department wishes to congratulate Dr. Kathryn M. Lorenz who has been named Director of Language Instruction in UC's School of World Languages and Cultures.

2. Dr. Nicasio Urbina, Director of Graduate Studies for Romance Languages and Literatures has published an exciting new book, Viajemas. Poemas de viajes. This most recent book of poetry is divided iinto three sections. The first, "Viajemas," presents poems of travel. The second section explores existentialism, and the final section offers philosophical poems of life and happiness. Dr. Urbina takes the structure of the love poem and applies it to cities and countries. He has presented his book in several venues which include his home town of Granada, Nicaragua. Congratulations, Dr. Urbina.

3. The Department is pleased to welcome Visiting Taft Scholar Enrique Jaramillo Levi, a Panamanian poet and short story writer. Taft Scholar Jaramillo Levi holds various degrees from the University of Panama and the University of Iowa. Among his academic creditals are a specialization in English as a Second Language and Creative Literature. He has authored more than 50 books of various genres including theatre, poetry, short stories and essays. Taft Scholar Jaramillo Levi is the recipient of various literary awards.

4.Several Study Abroad Programs were lead by members of our department. Dr. Carlos Gutiérrez led a group to Madrid, Spain for an academic program. Dr. Carl Bryant led a group to Granada, Nicaragua for an academic and service learning program.
