Application

Requirements:

  1. A bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university. We prefer students with literary backgrounds, and specifically with majors in French, but we have waived this requirement when students show promise in the study of literature.
  2. A good scholastic record and a good foundation in French and literature. The minimum GPA is 3.00. (See also the general admission requirements outlined in the Bulletin of the Division of Graduate Education and Research.)
  3. Three letters of recommendation, preferably from recent language or literature professors.
  4. An application, accompanied by official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Follow this link for an online application. Remember, however, that the deadline for applications for our department is February 1, not April 15, as suggested by UC's Graduate School. The application for admission to the MA program also constitutes an application for a position as a TA in department.
  5. An essay summarizing the applicant's education and work experience; a list of any publications, research activities, and honors received; and a statement of purpose in seeking admission to the graduate program.
  6. A literary essay in French of at least five pages.
  7. Non-native speakers of French must supply a taped conversation with another speaker in French or interview with the Graduate Director.
  8. A grade of 520 on the paper-based TOEFL or 190 on the computer-based TOEFL (international students only). In addition, all new international TAs and Graduate Student Lecturers must pass the Oral English Proficiency Test administered by UC before being allowed to teach.
