Rankings

The American Philosophical Association does not sanction any rankings or ratings of philosophy departments. There is an unofficial ranking of departments conducted by a law professor at the University of Chicago which is widely read by prospective graduate students. Although our department's excellence in philosophy of biology, philosophy of cognitive science, philosophy of mind, and aesthetics is affirmed by that survey, we nevertheless believe that it is methodologically flawed and not generally an accurate measure of the quality of philosophy departments or their effectiveness in graduate education. Our excellences are grounded in intensive reviews by experts inside and outside the university of all aspects of our graduate program. We strongly encourage prospective graduate students to learn as much as possible about the actual performance of various departments and not rely solely on surveys of individual reputation.
