• The department mourns the loss of Don Gustafson (1934-2009). Don
rejuvenated the department when he joined as Head in 1971 from the
University of Colorado a mere decade after he received the PhD from
the University of Texas. Don's interests ranged widely, but late in his
career he turned his attention more squarely to the science of pain
and qualia, as well as environmental ethics. Don retired in 2000, but
continued to mentor and teach graduate students. He will be sorely
missed. There will be a memorial service on Sunday, March 22, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Cincinnati Nature Center.
• The department is pleased to announce the hiring of Vanessa Carbonell (PhD, Michigan) in ethical theory and moral psychology and Lauren Hartzell (PhD, Stanford) in environmental philosophy. Vanessa joins us in the fall of 2009. Lauren will join us in the fall of 2011 and until then will be a post doctoral fellow at the University of Washington. Welcome Vanessa and Lauren!
