As the home of more than 5,600 undergraduates and 900 graduate students last year, the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences is the heart of University of Cincinnati. In our effort to go green, I am pleased to share our 2008-2009 annual report in its new electronic format, which quantitatively highlights A&S's recent achievements, challenges and future steps in achieving excellence in learning, discovery and outreach.

The content of this annual report represents some hard-earned accomplishments during a trying time for higher education. In spite of economic hardships, our quest for academic excellence has not waned. It is a time to celebrate our successes while also working diligently to continue reaching our goals.

Our caliber of students continues to increase. Majors enrolled in the college have increased for the third year in a row and the retention rate has improved as well. ACT and SAT scores of incoming students steadily rose 11 percent in five years and we had 15 new Merit Scholars last year, bringing McMicken's total to 31—the most we've had in the past five years.

Research excellence is growing, too. Our faculty have produced more articles, book chapters and presentations this year than in the past, and funding via private foundations has increased 70 percent since last year. A number of our programs, including Classics and paleontology, continue to be ranked among the top 10 programs in the country.

We welcome alumni and friends to engage with the college to help us reach our goals of student centeredness, academic excellence, stellar research and diversity. For A&S to make its mark in this changing world, the efforts of alumni and friends become an integral component of our success. Thank you again for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Valerie Gray Hardcastle
