The Judaic Studies Major
About the program
The department of Judaic Studies offers a comprehensive education in the history, literature, and arts of the Jews from biblical times to the present. Our interdisciplinary faculty specializes in such areas as Ancient Judaism, Biblical Literature, Archaeology, Medieval Jewish history, Jewish Literature, Holocaust Studies, Zionism, and Modern Jewish history. Students benefit from a rich educational experience, which may include internships, travel, and study in Israel. Judaic Studies fully integrates the resources of UC, and draws upon the Hebrew Union College and the American Jewish Archives. Judaic Studies at UC provides an integrated humanities education tailored to the needs and interests of each individual student.
The Judaic studies major consists of 63 credits
Successful completion of the Elementary Hebrew language sequence (104-105-106) or an equivalent is required for entrance into Intermediate Hebrew (201-202-203), but Elementary Hebrew does not apply towards the major. This enables the Judaic Studies major to use the one-year Elementary Hebrew sequence to completely fulfill the 15-hour language requirement of the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences. Placement tests are available if a student wishes to be considered for exemption or advanced placement.
