Kaffee in
the Kade
At the beginning of every academic year students in departmental undergraduate classes
are invited to come to the Max Kade German Cultural Center to meet the
faculty and to learn more about departmental programs, such as the major,
the minor, study abroad, and international co-op. Refreshments are provided.
Focus
Graduate Student Conference
Graduate students in the Department of German Studies organize a conference
in the fall, in which graduate students from this country and abroad
come together for two days of paper presentations and discussions. Participants
are selected on the basis of proposals submitted to the Editor of Focus
on German Studies, the departmental graduate student journal.
Brown Bag
Lunches
Once a quarter faculty members and graduate students come together for
a brown bag lunch, at which one member of the faculty presents his/her
current research.
German
Day
Every year the Department of German Studies invites area high school
teachers to bring their German classes to UC for a day of competitions
in areas ranging from baked goods to posters, and from poetry recitations
to cultural knowledge. Information for German Day 2008 has been posted at the link above.
Max
Kade Distinguished Visiting Professor
The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University
of Cincinnati is fortunate in being able to invite a distinguished scholar
from Germany to join the department as Max Kade Distinguished Visiting
Professor for one quarter each academic year. Recent visitors have included
Renate Möhrmann from the University
of Cologne; Hans-Michael Speier, a scholar and poet from Berlin; Inge
Stephan from the Humboldt University in
Berlin; Klaus Jeziorkowski from the University
of Frankfurt, Doerte Bischoff from the University of Muenster, Irmela Krüger-Fürhoff from the Universität Greifswald, Professor Alexander Kosenina from the University of Bristol, and Dr. Gesa Dane from the Universitat Goettingen.
We welcome Dr. Gabriele Duerbeck from the Universitat Rostock as our Max Kade Distinguished Visiting Professor in Spring 2008.

The tradition continues on Wednesday nights from 7:00pm until ?
We will be meeting at the historic restaurant The Mecklenburg Gardens,
located on 302 East University Street in Corryville. The historic restaurant
provides a great atmosphere, delicious food, and an incredible selection
of beers! This is a community event, so all are welcome who are interested
in steaking Greman or learning about German culture. Email
