The Department of German Studies at the University of Cincinnati has been a vital center for the exploration of German
literature, culture, and language since its founding over 100 years ago. Medium in size, the department prides itself on its spirit of congeniality and cooperativeness and on the demonstrated
excellence of its faculty and programs.
The department's teaching mission remains to offer high-quality undergraduate and graduate education by means of a curriculum which integrates
German language learning with a broad knowledge and in-depth understanding of literary and cultural history. Students become fluent in German and acquire cultural literacy, so as to contribute
to greater global awareness even as they assume their roles in careers and society.
Equal emphasis
is placed on its research mission: as part of a Research I institution,
the faculty members are active scholars who enjoy national and international
reputations in the field. Through visiting lectureships, the annual
presence of a Max Kade Distinguished Visiting Professor, and lectures
by its faculty at conferences and other institutions, the department
maintains lively contacts with scholars and other institutions both
here and abroad.
