There are many sources of funding graduate studies in German at the University of Cincinnati. Most students serve as teaching assistants, who teach independent courses under the close supervision and mentoring of the coordinator of basic languages. Each year, two students serve as editorial assistants at journals produced in the department (Focus on German Studies and the Lessing Yearbook). Other students receive year-long fellowships from the Max Kade Foundation, the Charles Phelps Taft Research Center. Additionally, one student each year receives an award from the VDAC to study in Germany. Additional teaching opportunities are available during the summer in langauge courses and the International Co-Op Program. Most of our students receive a full tuition waver plus a stipend for living expenses.
Graduate
Students Assistantships (GTAs)
Most
graduate students support themselves during their graduate careers by serving
as graduate student teaching assistants (GTAs), which enables them to gain
valuable experience by teaching in the department's undergraduate language
program. The GTA stipend is awarded in addition to tuition remission.
Max
Kade Graduate Fellowship
The
most prestigious award for graduate students in the department, this fellowship
is made possible through the generous support of the Max
Kade Foundation. This fellowship offers support for one academic
year.
Taft
Fellowships and Stipends
Through
the generosity of the Charles Phelps Taft Memorial Fund, graduate students
in the Department of German Studies are eligible for travel grants, research
stipends as well as year-long fellowships. Find
out more about Taft.
Lessing
Society Editorial Assistantship
Graduate
students wishing editorial experience may apply to serve as Editorial Assistant
to the Lessing
Society, an international literary society founded and housed at the
University of Cincinnati. The position involves proofing of manuscripts,
proofing of printed proofs, and some administrative and bookkeeping duties.
Remuneration is approximately thesame as that for a GTA.
Focus
Editorial Assistantship
Graduate
students in the Department of German Studies publish a graduate student
journal Focus
on German Studies. Graduate students wishing editorial experience may
apply to serve as Editorial Assistant for the journal. The Editorial
Assistant is responsible for the production of the journal, as well as
for the evalution of article submissions and book reviews. Remuneration
is approximately the same as that for a GTA.
Study Abroad
Through
an agreement with the Federation of German-American Clubs, this department
each fall sends one student to Germany for one academic year of study.
Participating universities include: Berlin, Tübingen, Munich and Erfurt.
Summer
School Teaching
Most
graduate students teach during at least one quarter during the summer for
additional stipends.
International
Co-Op Program
In
a joint effort with UC's Institute for Global Affairs, this department
teaches an intensive summer language program for students enrolled in the
university's professional colleges (predominantly engineering and business
students) to prepare them for co-op experience in Germany. Each year
two graduate students receive funding to teach in this intensive summer
language training program.
