About the Honorarkonsu
There has been a representative of Germany in Cincinnati, Ohio, ever since 1847. Back then, the Consul served the needs of an emerging German-American community in the city. Over the years, there have been many changes and ups-and-downs affecting Germany's foreign relations to the United States of America and Cincinnati, but diplomatic ties have continued. Since World War II, Honorary Consuls have served the interests of Germany in the Greater Cincinnati and Tristate area.

The current Honorary Consul is Richard E. Schade, Professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures, University of Cincinnati. Schade is a German-American who was educated at the University of New Hampshire and Yale University. During his academic career he has studied at German universities in Marburg and Tübingen. He frequently visits Germany professionally and is, of course, fluent in the German language. For an academic profile, visit his faculty page.

Duties of the Honorarkonsul
Schade's territory as Honorary Consul includes the following counties in Ohio-- Adams, Brown, Butler, Clermont, Clinton, Fayette, Greene, Hamilton, HIghland, Montgomery, Preble and Warren; in Kentucky -- Boone, Campbell and Kenton; in Indiana -- Dearborn County.

As Honorary Consul he reports to the German Consul General in Chicago, Illinois, and he cooperates with his fellow Honorary Consuls in Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio; in Indianapolis, Indiana and in Louisville, Kentucky. Click here for a list of consulates in the United States.

As Honorary Consul Schade can provide or direct you to sources of information on the Federal Republic of Germany. He serves those who desire advice and who need forms related to travel and extended stays in Germany (passports for German citizens, visas for non-German citizens, residence permits; most forms can be downloaded from germany-info.org). He serves those who may require interpretation of German-language documents of any kind. He notarizes legal documents from Germany, be they connected to restitution payments for Holocaust survivors, to retirement benefits, or to inheritance issues (Erbscheine).

In addition, Schade gladly serves the political, business, educational and cultural communities in any way possible. He willingly supports the Munich Sister City Association, as well as the Blue Ash - Ilmenau and Colerain - Giesing Partnerships, and German-American organizations and interests in the Tristate area.

Office Hours of the Honorarkonsul Richard Schade
The office of the Honorary Consul is open for personal consultation and business on Mondays 1-5 p.m. from Labor Day until Memorial Day each year. US national holidays are observed, German holidays not.
