This curriculum information is intended as a general planning guide for students considering or enrolled in this major. This
tool is designed to assist you, but is not a substitute for planning with an academic or faculty adviser.

If you are currently enrolled at UC, you can audit your degree online. If you are considering transferring to this major from
another school use the Course Applicability System (CAS) to see how credits you have earned will apply to this major at UC.
Majors should see the departmental adviser early in their program to discuss their interests, departmental
requirements and plan their schedule. After the sophomore year students may be considered for an environmental
internship, which counts towards their upper level elective requirements. ES student internships have ranged from
those with the EPA and the National Parks to local and national non-profits, such as the Cincinnati Zoo and the
Wilderness Society.

Although the Environmental Studies curriculum draws on courses offered across the university, it unifies students in the program

through two unique sequences. Both are team-taught by ES faculty and cover the diverse areas and skills of the discipline. The

first, Environmental Studies I, II, and III, must be taken prior to admission to the major. The second, the Senior Capstone sequence

is designed to be a capstone experience for seniors in the program. The introductory sequence integrates standard lectures,

case studies, videos, and web exploration into the learning experience. The capstone sequence provides opportunities for the

advanced student to apply what they have learned to real-world situations, sites, and materials.

The ES curriculum also allows student to specialize. Students, along with their advisor, design an elective track suited to their

goals. Program electives are available from numerous A&S departments, the College of Engineering, and the College of Design,

Art & Architecture. An approved list of electives is frequently updated and can be obtained from the ES Advisor (603 Rieveschl),

or from this website. Other curricular aspects of the program include seminar series, professional development workshops, and internships.
