Course Descriptions

The following year-long course sequences are essential components of the ESP curriculum. Both are team-taught by ESP faculty and cover the diverse areas and skills of the disicipline. The first, Environmental Studies I, II, and III, must be taken prior to admission to the major. The second, our Senior course sequence, is designed to be a capstone experience for seniors in the program.

Environmental Studies I, II, III (EVST-101, 102, 103) MWF 12-12:50

This comprehensive overview of Environmental Studies integrates standard lectures, case studies, videos, and web exploration into the learning experience. Students will have the benefit of multiple viewpoints, as the faculty team will attend and contribute to all meetings of the course. The fall quarter (101) introduces students to the physical and biological world and is taught by Dr. Huff (Geology) and Dr. Miller (Biological Sciences). In the winter (102), Dr. Hinkel (Geography) and Dr. Shann (Biological Sciences), develop a picture of the world's environmental resources and their degradation. By the spring quarter (103) students have enough background to consider the social and economic aspect of environmental issues as presented by Dr. Goddard (Economics) and Dr. DePoe (Communications).

Senior course sequence (EVST-501, 502, 503) (Beginning 2001-2002)

Although still in development, this sequence will be a hands-on, projects based course sequence in environmental data collection, sampling and analysis. Like the introductory sequence, it will be team taught by faculty with diverse expertise and experience.
