Environmental Resume Preparation:

DO's and DON'Ts

DO

  • Have accurate content
  • Omit first person pronouns (I, me, my)
  • Use short forceful phrases (not sentences) that begin with active verbs in the past tense
  • Make sure that punctuation, grammar, and spelling are perfect
  • Allow adequate margins and white space between paragraphs for emphasis and neatness
  • Accentuate the positive
  • Emphasize accomplishments Prepare a rough draft
  • Edit and re-edit
  • Have someone else critique your resume
  • Double check the final copy
  • Credit your achievements
  • Tailor your resume to each job application
  • Limit your resume to one page
  • Indicate that "References will be furnished upon request."
  • Look at resume examples provided by the ESP Internship Coordinator or look at other resumes shown on related Internet websites

DON'T

  • Be pompous or wordy
  • Take ten lines to describe something that can be described in two lines
  • Include geographic preferences or limitations unless absolutely necessary
  • Include anything negative
  • Let someone else prepare your resume
  • Include unnecessary data
  • Include hard-to-read, fancy, too big, or too little, and casual typefaces
