ETHOS

ETHOS is a student group at the University of Cincinnati, based in the Department of Communication, and led by Professor Steve Fuller. Although ETHOS is led by Communication faculty and students, all UC students are encouraged to participate.

Our mission is to serve the University of Cincinnati, and the surrounding Uptown community, by stepping outside of the classroom and putting theory into practice.

Check this site often to learn about current opportunities. To find out more about ETHOS, please contact Steve Fuller at Fullersj@uc.edu, or visit the ETHOS website at http://ucethos.blogspot.com.

TAFT MENTORING/TUTORING OPPORTUNITY

Thanks so much for your interest in helping with ETHOS and Taft Elementary! We're very excited about the opportunity to help some under resourced children, and we'd love to have you involved in that process.

Taft Elementary is a K-8 school in Uptown Cincinnati, and serves approximately 245 students from low-income families. Last Winter, I sat in a room with a dozen faculty members from Taft, including its principal, Ruthenna Jackson. Ms. Jackson and her staff spoke of their desperate need for mentors, tutors, basic school supplies, and money for various programs. If I could boil down everything into one simple statement, it would be this: Taft Elementary's students, staff, and families need people who care. And that's where we come in.

Here are some details: If you want to begin mentoring right away, there are 5 simple steps:

1 Email and let me know you are interested. My email address is fullersj@uc.edu. I'll be keeping track of all our participants, so I'd love to know for sure if you'll be moving on to the next 4 steps. I also invite you to call 556-4440 and set up a meeting with me during my office hours (3-4:20pm on Mondays and Wednesdays) so we have a chance to connect. I'd love to get the chance to meet you in person before you head out to Taft.

2 Call Kris Brown. Her number is 703-9139. Kris is a wonderful woman who leads Taft's mentoring/tutoring program. She will lead you into the next three steps.

3 Submit to a background check. With our crazy world, this is a no-brainer. When you call Kris, she will get the information she needs from you to make this happen.

4 Get trained. When you talk to Kris, she will set up a time you can meet with her to get all of the information you'll need to make the most of your tutoring opportunity. She is willing to do this during normal school hours - Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:00pm - or she will do it on a Saturday morning for those of you who work or attend school during the week.

5 Change lives! After you've cleared the background check and been trained, you're ready to go! Just show up Saturday mornings from 9am-12pm to begin tutoring. If Saturdays don't work, there are other opportunities available during the week, so just be sure to check with Kris and she'll get you plugged in.

If you're ready to jump in and get started, then you have all the information you need. If you'd like to talk more about the opportunity, just drop me an email, give me a call (884-7682), or set up an appointment during my office hours. Thanks again for your interest in helping these kids - it's going to make a huge difference in so many lives!
