Professional Summary

Jenefer Robinson teaches and writes on topics in aesthetics and philosophical psychology, especially the theory of emotion. She has long been a critic of the “cognitive” or “judgment” theory of emotion and has defended the view that emotions are processes in which an emotional (physiological) response is initiated by a “quick and dirty” appraisal that then gives way to more fine-grained cognitive monitoring of the situation. Her book, Deeper than Reason (OUP 2005) applies recent advances in emotion theory to issues in aesthetics, such as the expression of emotion in the arts, how music arouses emotions and moods, and how the emotional experience of literature and music in particular can be a mode of understanding and appreciation. Jenefer is Vice President of the American Society for Aesthetics.
