Mathematics Minor

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers an undergraduate minor in Mathematics for students majoring in another area. It is offered to students of any college at the University of Cincinnati; however, these courses must be taken in the College of Arts & Sciences (15): their equivalents from other colleges will not count toward this minor.

Advanced placement and calculus transfer credit can be counted toward the minor.

Requirements

A. Credits
Math 251, 252, 253 Calculus I, II, III 13
Math 256, 257 Calc Lab II, III 2
Math 351, 352 Linear Algebra I, II 6
B. Fifteen (15) additional credits to be selected from:
Math 264 Calculus IV
Math 273 Differential Equations
Courses at the 300-level or above (excluding 301, 302, 303, 305, 307, 308, 309, 377, 381)
Students may not elect:
both Intro to Abstract Math (357) and Discrete Math (410)
both Intro to Differential Equations (355) and Differential Equations (273)
both Probability and Statistics II (362) and Engineering Statistics (366)
C. Only College of Arts & Sciences (15) courses with a grade of C- or above may be used to count toward the 36 credits.

Notes

  1. The completion of the courses in A. (above) satisfies the pre-requisite for the following courses:
    Course Number Course Title
Stat 361, 362 Probability and Statistics I, II
Math 355 Intro to Differential Equations
Math 357 Intro to Abstract Mathematics
    Stat 366 Engineering Statistics
Math 555, 556 Applied Linear Algebra I, II
    Math 584 Combinatorics
    Math 588 Graph Theory
  2. The completion of the courses in A. (above), along with Calc IV (264), Intro to Abstract Math (357), or Differential Equations (273), or some combination thereof, satisfies the pre-requisites for most 400- and 500-level courses in Mathematics.
  3. Calc I - IV (251, 252, 253, 264), Linear Algebra I, II (351, 352), Differential Equations (273), and Probability & Statistics I, II (361, 362) serve as a model minor for students majoring in an applied area.
