The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers an undergraduate minor in Mathematics for students majoring in another area. It is offered to students
of any college at the University of Cincinnati; however, these courses must be taken in the College of Arts & Sciences (15): their equivalents from other colleges will not count toward this
minor.
Advanced placement and calculus transfer credit can be counted toward the minor.
Requirements
A.
Credits
Math 251, 252, 253 Calculus I, II, III
13
Math 256, 257 Calc Lab II, III
2
Math 351, 352 Linear Algebra I, II
6
B.
Fifteen (15) additional credits to be selected from:
Math 264 Calculus IV
Math 273 Differential Equations
Courses at the 300-level or above (excluding 300, 301, 303, 305, and 377)
Students may not elect:
both Intro to Abstract Math (357) and Discrete Math (410)
both Intro to Differential Equations (355) and Differential Equations (273)
both Probability and Statistics II (362) and Engineering Statistics (366)
C. Only College of Arts & Sciences (15) courses with a grade of C- or above may be used to count toward the 36 credits.
Notes
1. The completion of the courses in A. (above) satisfies the pre-requisites for the following courses:
Math 361, 362
Probability and Statistics I, II
Math 355
Intro to Differential Equations (combines Linear Algebra with Differential Equations)
Math 357
Intro to Abstract Mathematics
Math 406, 407
Intro to Geometry I, II
Math 410
Discrete Mathematics
Math 524, 525
Linear Programming I, II
Math 531, 532, 533
Applied Statistics I, II, III
Math 555, 556
Applied Linear Algebra I, II
Math 584
Combinatorics
Math 588
Graph Theory
2. The completion of the courses in A. (above), along with Calc IV (264), Intro to Abstract Math (357), or Intro to Ordinary
Differential Equations (355), or some combination thereof, satisfies the pre-requisites for most 400- and 500-level courses in Mathematics.
3. Calc I - IV (251, 252, 253, 264), Linear Algebra I, II (351, 352), Differential Equations (273), and Probability & Statistics I, II (361, 362) serve as a model minor for
students majoring in an applied area.

5. For the awarding of the minor: After completing the appropriate courses for the minor, stop by the Mathematics Office, room 839 Old Chemistry Bldg, to fill out an application. This must be done before or as you graduate. Include your email address so we can contact you if there is a problem.
6. The fact that you have been awarded a Minor degree in Mathematics will be indicated on your transcript. No certificate will be provided.
7. Interested students can build a Minor in Mathematics into a Second Major in Mathematics. For information, go to http://math.uc.edu/ugrad/second.html
