PhD

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a PhD with specializations in a wide variety of areas of mathematics and statistics including algebra, analysis, applied statistics, cryptography, differential equations, financial mathematics, mathematical bioscience, numerical analysis and probability. More details of research speicialties in the department can be found on our research site.

The PhD program has two different tracks, one for general students in mathematical sciences and a specialized track in applied statistics. Full details of both program can be found in our graduate handbook.

Financial aid in the form of graduate assistantships and/or tuition scholarships is available. Most full-time students entering into the PhD program receive packages totally over $13,000 together with full tuition remission.

The PhD program at UC has a long history dating back to the award of our first PhD in 1911. Many of our PhD's move on to positions in academia, whether in small liberal arts colleges such as Elon, or in large state universities such as the University of Arizona. International students frequently return to their home country to take up positions there. Alternatively many PhD's, particularly those in applied mathematics or applied astatistics, take up positions in the commercial or governmental sectors.

A complete list of doctoral graduates from the Department of Mathematical Sciences contains links to websites of many of our graduates who are currently in academic positions.
