Admissions and Application

Application Procedures:

Applications for admission and for financial aid should be submitted in December or January. The department begins making decisions in February and applications completed by February 1 will receive full consideration. However, some financial aid may still be available as late as the summer preceding the academic year. All application materials from foreign students requiring F-1 visas must be received prior to April 1 in order to be considered for the upcoming year. Foreign applicants are strongly encouraged to have all materials in by February 1, in order to allow time for the necessary paperwork to be processed. The application must contain:

1. Statement of Purpose/cover letter
2. Application form with $40 application fee
3. Official copy of transcripts
4. Three letters of recommendation
5. GRE general test score. (Although it is not a requirement, the GRE Mathematics subject test is strongly recommended.)
6. TOEFL score for all applicants whose native language is not English

The applicant should provide relevant contact information including e-mail addresses, telephone numbers, FAX numbers, and mailing addresses.

All applicants will be considered automatically for financial aid. Awards are made on the basis of merit only. The committee's decisions involve evaluations of test scores, transcripts, and letters of recommendation.

Students are encouraged to apply on-line at the following web address: http://www.grad.uc.edu/admissions/gradapp.cfm

Applicants who are unable to apply on-line may request the appropriate application materials from:

Admissions Requirements:

Students who apply to study in either Pure or Applied Mathematics should have the equivalent of an undergraduate major in Mathematics with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 ("B" average) in the mathematics courses. For students interested in studying Statistics, an undergraduate major in Statistics with a 3.0 GPA is highly desirable. Applicants for the Statistics Master's degree must have mastered at least Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra.

The GRE general test is required for admission. A minimum score of 700 is required on the quantitative section. Generally, higher total scores are expected for those students admitted to the PhD program.

Proficiency in English is expected of foreign students in the graduate program. A minimum score of 560 on the TOEFL is required for a UGS and a minimum score of 580 is required for a GA. Foreign students are encouraged to take the TSE exam. Students with a score of 50 or higher on the TSE are eligible for classroom instruction.
