Topics in Mathematics
15-MATH-155, 156, 157

Mathematics has been extraordinarily successful in helping analyze and solve problems arising in everyday life–the "real world." In the last half century, while our society has grown more complex, mathematics has played a more significant role in a broader range of applications. Unfortunately, few people realize the impact mathematics and its applications have on their lives. Topics in Mathematics is a three-course sequence introducing students to many of the new and fascinating ways mathematics affects society. There are no prerequisites beyond the usual level of mathematics required for a high-school diploma. The three courses making up the sequence are independent of each other and need not be taken in order. The three courses are:

15-MATH-155 (Fall, Summer): Management Science
15-MATH-156 (Winter, Summer): Probability and Statistics
15-MATH-157 (Spring, Summer): Social Choice and Decision Making

Topics in Mathematics is designed for students majoring in non-scientific subject areas. It is well suited to students who need to satisfy their General Education mathematics requirement and who are not planning on taking further mathematics courses. Students who would prefer more challenging, in-depth coverage of mathematical subjects should consider Elementary Probability and Statistics (15-MATH-147, 148, 149) or Finite Mathematics and Calculus (15-MATH-225, 226, 227).
