The department of Mathematical Sciences offers a complete range of programs, from the bachelor's to the doctoral level in both mathematics and statistics.

Our undergraduate program offers tracks in applied mathematics, statistics and pure mathematics, as well as a track designed especially for future high school teachers. Our programs for majors from other colleges and departments (mathematics as a second major and the mathematics minor) have shown dramatic growth in recent years reflecting the increased need for a strong mathematical background in subjects such as computer and biomedical engineering.

The Master in Arts for Teachers of mathematics (MAT) is one of the country's premier master's degree programs for in-service teachers. A rotating cohort of 30 teachers spend three summers studying a wide variety of topics in mathematics designed to complement the subject matter taught in high school. First established in the 1960s, the program now has more than 200 graduates, many of whom still teach in Greater Cincinnati high schools.

Our Master in Science in the Mathematical Sciences program prepares students for further study at the doctoral level, as well as careers in education and business.

Our Master in Science in Statistics program prepares students for further study at the doctoral level, as well as careers as statisticians in industry. This highly successful program, with an enrollment of more than 40, has placed students in statistical positions at many of Cincinnati's major employers, such as the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Procter and Gamble, ACNielsen Bases, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The doctoral program in mathematics and statistics is one of the oldest in Ohio, with the first degree awarded in 1912. Graduates of our program have moved on to faculty positions in universities all over the world, as well as to jobs as applied mathematicians and statisticians in both the public and private sectors.

Our faculty pride themselves equally on their research and their dedication to teaching. They publish regularly in major research journals and have written books ranging from calculus texts to advanced research monographs. Our expertise encompasses a broad range of subjects, from traditional pure mathematical specialties such as algebra, analysis, and geometry, to probability and statistics, to cutting edge applications in cryptography, finance, and neuroscience.
