English Department Writing Prize Competition

Award recipients and their guests will be invited to the Annual Awards Reception in June 2010, where prizes will be presented. The Department of English takes this opportunity to thank students in advance for entering the competition. We appreciate your interest now, and we encourage your writing in the future.

Competition Rules

  • Students are encouraged to enter more than one contest, but may submit only one entry per category. The same entry cannot win or place in more than one category.
  • Entrants must be registered UC students for at least one quarter during the 2009-10 academic year.
  • Undergraduate creative writing entries are subject to review for publication in Short Vine.
  • Prizes are to be determined, may vary by category, and may range from certificates of achievement to monetary awards up to $1000. Monetary awards may affect financial aid or be applied to outstanding UC bills.

Undergraduate Student Prize Categories

  • Academy of American Poets Prize: Best single poem
  • Browning Prize: Best essay written on the poetry of the Brownings
  • Coons Lafcadio Hearn Journalism Prize: Best feature article
  • English Composition Prize: Outstanding essays written for an English 101 or 102 class in 2009-10
  • Hopton Short Story Prize: Best short story
  • Jean Chimsky Poetry Prize: Outstanding group of three to five poems
  • Playwriting Prize: Best play
  • Professional Writing Prize: Excellence in professional writing
  • Robinson Essay Prize: Outstanding essay
  • Shakespeare Prize: Best essay written on Shakespeare (limited to students registered full-time 10W or 10S)
  • Staples Senior Honor Thesis: Best senior honors thesis in 2009-10

Graduate Student Prize Categories
