English Department Study Tours

Have you ever tried to imagine what it would be like to be one of the characters in the literature you study? Or perhaps wondered about the rural and urban landscapes authors such as Chaucer, Pound, or Browning wrote about? Well, stop wondering, and LIVE IT!

The Department of English offers a variety of study tours where you will receive course credit to travel to another country and experience cultures you previously only read about in a traditional classroom!

Together with UC International Programs, the Department of English will take you to other countries, and we will even help you pay for it! Full-time UC students are eligible to apply for a grant from IGSA of up to $500.00! In addition, students majoring in an Arts & Sciences Taft department are eligible to apply for graduate or undergraduate Taft Enrichment Awards of up to $2,000.00!

Exciting Study Tours from Past Quarters

In this study tour, Professor John Drury took a group of sixteen to a land renowned for romance and excess--where Casanova was imprisoned for seducing the wives of other men and where Napolean ended the Republic, which had stood for over a thousand years. A city with walls of Tintorettos and streets of water-- VENICE!

This 9-day excursion to the land of gondolas and luxury was enhanced with day trips to some of the surrounding lagoon islands--including Torcello, Burano, Murano, and San Michele (the island cemetary where Joseph Brodsky and Ezra Pound are buried). In the city itself, high points included visiting the Doge's Palace & prison chambers, the Jewish Ghetto (setting for Merchant of Venice), Browning's home, and the Madonna dell' Orto.
