English & Comparative Literature
English Major
Creative Writing Track
The Creative Writing Track of the English major is designed for students who wish to devote particular study to the craft of writing as well as broaden their perspectives of literature to include that of the writer. In this series of workshops and literature courses, students hone their skills, insight, and confidence as writers and readers. The Creative Writing Track of the English major offers useful preparation for careers in writing and editing.
Literary & Cultural Studies Track
This area focuses on the study of significant texts and forms, both literary and extra-literary, from all historical periods; major critical theories and approaches, current as well as foundational; and the historical, cultural, and ideological conditions under which texts have been produced and received. Students may focus their coursework in a particular historical period or genre, sample from a variety of periods and genres, or explore one or more kinds of cultural study. Students in this track develop an ability to read and analyze a range of texts, preparing them well for various career opportunities as well as graduate study.
Rhetoric & Professional Writing Track
This track prepares students to write persuasively and effectively in public and professional contexts. Students in this track may design a program of study that leads to employment in commercial and non-profit organizations, to graduate work in rhetoric and professional writing, and/or to enhanced literacy and more informed, responsible participation in civic affairs.
