Independent Study

In addition to formal coursework, students can pursue individualized study opportunities under the mentorship of a faculty member. These opportunities include readings courses, in which students work with the faculty member to develop a list of readings that enhance the student's exposure to anthropological research. Additional requirements and ways of assessing the student's progress will vary, depending on the discretion of the faculty member.

Students may also work with a faculty member to develop an independent research project, which may or may not be related to the professor's own research. Before requesting permission to develop such projects, students should generally have prior exposure to anthropological theory and methods.

To enroll for either a readings course (ANTH 327, 328, 329, 437, 438, 439) or an individualized research course (ANTH 581, 582, 583), students must first seek permission of a faculty member in the department of anthropology. Because courses vary in terms of content, requirements, and credit hours, it is important to establish expectations and guidelines before formally enrolling.

Please note that there are limits to the number of credit hours from the aforementioned courses that can be applied toward fulfillment of the requirements for the major.
