Professional Summary

Leila Rodriguez is an anthropologist and demographer who studies the economic aspects of international migration. She received a PhD from the Pennsylvania State University in 2009 before joining the Anthropology Department at UC.

Her research focuses on two aspects of migration. The first is the economic adaptation of immigrants, particularly job transitions and self-employment. In this area she has conducted research on Russian immigrants in Costa Rica, Dominican immigrants in Pennsylvania, Guatemalan refugees, Nicaraguan immigrants in Costa Rica and the U.S, and Nigerian immigrants in New York City. The latter were the focus of her dissertation research, which examined the self-employment experience of Nigerians, and the differential structure and use of business-related social networks.

Her second area of research pertains to migration and development. She is currently preparing to conduct research on the effects of global restructuring, local labor markets and migration in Central America. This project will investigate the proximate determinants of migration in sending countries, as well as the economic adaptation of immigrants in the region, particularly Costa Rica.

Methodologically, she is trained in qualitative, quantitative, spatial and social network research techniques and constantly attempts to integrate different kinds of data in her research.
